Book Review: Fleabag: The Scriptures by Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Do you ever just watch a show and fall in love with it immediately? (Turns out it’s easier for me to do that with TV shows and books as opposed to actual people!). This was definitely the case with Fleabag, the play turned BBC hit TV show. It was only watching it recently that made me realise I had Fleabag: The Scriptures laying around on my shelf, a birthday present from last year (from my sister who was equally in love with the show when we watched it).

I loved the wit and dark humour of the two series’ so I couldn’t wait to dive into this book, seeing the words I think I could probably quote if you asked, and see it come to life before my eyes.

Fleabag: Scriptures includes new writing from Phoebe Waller-Bridge alongside filming scripts and never-before-seen stage directions from the award-winning series.

Review

DISCLAIMER: Unlike a lot of my book reviews, this one isn’t going to be very long.

Fleabag: The Scriptures is just like the BBC show, only if you watched it with subtitles. It has all the wit, heart and fourth-walling of the series and it really felt as if you were a fly on the wall, watching the series be filmed, rather than reading the book on your couch covered in Belvita crumbs (just me? Ok….).

I like a good play, so it was interesting to read dialogue I was familiar with in a completely different way (there was no was I was attempting to replicate anyone’s accents, though).

Though it is very much just a re-hashing of the material from the show, I think I could dive into the characters minds a bit more than I could in the show.

I liked the added touch of behind-the-scenes thoughts from Waller-Bridge, though a lot of it was thanking other people for their hard work so it felt as though I was reading an awards show transcript as opposed to a book.

Overall, though, this book was as funny, heartfelt and thoughtful as the show was for me. It made me realise just how talented Waller-Bridge is and I can’t wait for whatever she comes up with next.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars
