Songs That Make Me Happy

In light of the fact that this week (18-24 May 2020) is Mental Health Awareness Week, I thought I’d write a post about songs that make me happy.

It’s very easy to feel sad – it’s perfectly okay to as well – and it seems, with awful news swirling around constantly and the world in a bit of a mess, to be the default in the world right now. Spending my time a lot differently than I imagined has not only made me feel pretty sad (about the fact I’m missing friends and family as well as the social events and plans that’ve been put on hold, at least for now), but it has also made me realise what truly makes me happy: baking, watching TV/movies, reading, writing, family and friends and music.

Whilst I’m definitely not musically gifted (my brief attempt at keyboard lessons at school, and the nerves that hit whenever the choir I decided to become a part of performed, provided me with early proof of this), listening to music, talking about it and attending concerts is something I’ve always loved. I think, if I had a friend in the industry and a lot more confidence, I would love to be a radio presenter – playing songs and chatting about music all day.

Music definitely impacts how we feel and so, with that in mind, I thought I’d let you know just a few songs that make me happy.

ā€œDance The Night Awayā€ by The Mavericks

Though it’s definitely not my usual style of music, this song holds a special place in my heart. I fondly remember dancing around to this as a child in my grandparent’s house – both of whom are sadly no longer with us – and listening to the song makes me think of all the lovely times I had with them both.

ā€œLife’s What You Make Itā€ by Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus)

To be honest, most of the upbeat songs that featured in Hannah Montana make me happy but this one in particular triggers memories of my twin sister and I dancing around our room with the CD player blasting.

ā€œIf You Wannaā€ by The Vaccines

Whilst it’s not exactly the happiest song lyric wise, practically all of the songs on the debut album from one of my favourite bands makes me happy – this one in particular. It reminds me of sunnier, sweatier days dancing away and just taking time out to enjoy the music.

ā€œStreets of Parisā€ by Will Joseph Cook

Whenever I hear this song, I can’t help but sing my heart out and feel a smile creeping on my face. It was amazing hearing him sing it live, and even lovelier to meet him the first time I saw him live, and it definitely makes my day feel a bit brighter.

ā€œUnder The Seaā€ from Disney’s The Little Mermaid

Even watching this film makes me smile, and that definitely has something to do with the catchy, cheery songs throughout. This song makes me think of my childhood, and Disney, which makes me feel great.

ā€œGreen Lightā€ by Lorde

This album, this song in particular, reminds me of a holiday with my parents, sister and one of our best friends. We listened to this album non-stop and listening to it now reminds me of days lounging by the pool, eating ice-cream and sunnier days.

ā€œHeroesā€ by David Bowie

Even though there’s a little bit of sadness when I listen to it now, and think about the fact David Bowie isn’t alive, this song makes me think of my parents – who had this song as their first dance song at their wedding, and introduced my brother, sister and I to great music growing up – and how much I love them and owe them for the person I’ve turned out to be.

ā€œTake Over The Worldā€ by The Courteeners

Not only is this a tune (in my opinion), this song makes me feel happy and like I can take on anything.

ā€œSomething Thereā€ from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and The Beast is one of my favourite movies of all time, not only for the animation and the romance but for the songs. I could’ve gone for the obvious one with this film but nothing makes me happier than the moment Belle and the Beast realise they actually like each other!

ā€œOne Kissā€ by Dua Lipa

To be fair, I could’ve picked more than one Dua Lipa song because both albums are incredible but this song in particular- at least until New Rules and Don’t Start Now came out – makes me think of happier times, dancing and getting drunk with my friends and I can’t wait to dance to this song with them all again once this is over.

What songs make you happy? I’d love to chat in the comments 😊.
