The Great British Bake Off: Season 11, Episode 5 – My Thoughts

It’s that time again, my favourite time of the week (apart from Music Mondays), another episode of The Great British Bake Off has arrived. Last week, it was Chocolate Week and the bakers braved brownies, battled babka and crafted white chocolate celebration cakes.

This week, we’re halfway through! The bakers took on pastry – something I’ve never put the time or energy into mastering because, let’s face it, pre-buying pastry is just the simplest option!

As with my previous posts, I’ll talk about the bakers, the challenges and the result. SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF, SEASON 11 EPISODE 5.

The bakers

As I’ve said previously, my opinion on the bakers will change as the show goes on.

This week, I’m loving Laura, Hermine and Peter.

So far, I’m thinking Hermine, Laura, Peter and Mark.

The challenges

The fifth week of the competition was Pastry Week and, as always, the bakers took on the Signature, Technical and Showstopper challenges.

𝒮𝒾𝑔𝓃𝒶𝓉𝓊𝓇𝑒 𝒞𝒽𝒶𝓁𝓁𝑒𝓃𝑔𝑒

For the Signature Challenge, the bakers were asked to make 8 pasties. It’s safe to say the bakers didn’t play it safe, and it paid off…for some.

𝒯𝑒𝒸𝒽𝓃𝒾𝒸𝒶𝓁 𝒞𝒽𝒶𝓁𝓁𝑒𝓃𝑔𝑒

For the Technical Challenge, the bakers were asked to make eclairs. Some were good, others left something to be desired.

𝒮𝒽𝑜𝓌𝓈𝓉𝑜𝓅𝓅𝑒𝓇 𝒞𝒽𝒶𝓁𝓁𝑒𝓃𝑔𝑒

For the pastry based Showstopper Challenge, the bakers were asked to make a caged tart. Most of the bakers did pretty good, though there were some obvious casualties in the tent.

As I always say, this was a tough one but the results were:

This week was a difficult one for a few bakers, and it was very stressful, but it was very good indeed!
