My Thoughts

This book has been on my NetGalley shelf for what feels like forever and I just wanted a light-hearted read so, in amongst other books and blog tours, I picked this one up.

I’d never read any of Gibson’s books (you only have to browse her website to see that there are a lot) so I had no idea what to expect from her latest, The Dog Share.

The book follows Suzy and Ricky, both of whom are at different points in their lives but are united by the Hebridean beach and a shabby terrier named Scout.

Whilst the cover has a contemporary romance feel to it, the story itself isn’t just about romance. In fact, no spoilers, but the story basically starts with Suzy’s failed romance and how this leads her on a journey – I would argue – of self discovery. I really appreciated how Gibson depicted Suzy’s growth as the book went on.

Another thing I loved was the setting. I’ve only been to one area of Scotland but Gibson sets the scene so well. I could easily see the nice beaches Suzy went to on her walks or the small room she lives in when Scout arrives at her door.

Of course I loved Scout. I love dogs and it was impressive how well Gibson not only described Scout but also how well she describes how much dogs change people’s lives…for the better.

I also really liked the friendship between Suzy and Cara, and the relationship between Ricky and his son. The relationships were sweet, honest and helped move the story along.

The one thing I wasn’t so keen on was the romance. It was obvious that the romance was going to happen but – in my opinion – it just didn’t feel believable. It took too long to actually happen and when the romance did happen it just felt rushed.

Regardless, The Dog Share is a sweet contemporary novel about finding your feet, family and friendship.
