Book Review: Everyone You Hate Is Going to Die by Daniel Sloss

We’re into the final month of 2021 and I’m hoping to get some reading done before the month is up, hence the ambitious (read: slightly longer than usual) December TBR. For now, though, I thought I’d post a review of the book I read after White Wedding : Everyone You Hate Is Going to Die by Daniel Sloss.

Now, in his first book, he picks up where Jigsaw and his other specials left off, and goes after every conceivable kind of relationship–with one’s country (Daniel’s is Scotland), with America, with lovers, ex-lovers, ex-lovers who you hate, ex-lovers who hate you, with parents, with best friends (male and female), not-best friends, with children, and with siblings. In Everyone You Hate Is Going to Die, every relationship gets the hilarious, brutal (but always incisive) Sloss treatment as he explains why all of our relationships are fragile and ridiculous and awful–but, just maybe, also valuable and meaningful.

My Thoughts

Although it’s safe to say I’m a lover of fiction, lately I’ve gravitated towards non-fiction and – because of this – I’ve stumbled across some of the best books I’ve read in ages, this being one of them.

My sister picked this book up as we’re both fans of Sloss and his straight to the point comedic style and — despite the initial apprehension the title caused for me (mainly because I wasn’t feeling a depressing book!) — I actually throughly enjoyed reading this one, as strange as it feels to say that.

It feels strange to say that because this book is blunt. Incredibly so. So blunt it takes you off guard a bit and has you reading and re-reading sentences to make sure you read them correctly (you did). I thought I’d be offended by the sharp, sarcastic tone of this one and the fact that all bases are not just covered but picked and pull apart but I think this actually made the reading experience for me – though there were obvious edited parts, you didn’t lose the sense that these are Sloss’s thoughts and feelings.

Sloss covers a lot of bases in this book, from life, death, sex, relationships to things like politics and that pandemic we’re all sick of hearing about (and even more sick of living in!) in a book which is deeply personal, informative and funny.

Everyone You Hate Is Going to Die is not the most ground breaking non-fiction you’ll ever read (I have no idea what the “most ground breaking non-fiction” you’ll read is because I’m pretty sure that translates as dull and boring, but each to their own!) but it does make you realise there is so much to value.
