Weāre into the final month of 2021 and Iām hoping to get some reading done before the month is up, hence the ambitious (read: slightly longer than usual) December TBR. For now, though, I thought Iād post a review of the book I read after White Wedding : Everyone You Hate Is Going to Die by Daniel Sloss.
Blurb
From one of todayās hottest young comedians, a transgressive and hilarious deep-dive into his favorite subject: relationships
Daniel Slossās comedy engages, enrages, offends, unsettles, educates, comforts, and gets audiences roaring with laughterāall at the same time. He has two Netflix comedy specials: DARK, a brilliant, laugh-out-loud meditation on our relationship with death; and Jigsaw, which needles apart the ideas of love, romantic relationships, and marriageāand according to Sloss, singlehandedly caused 160 divorces and 95,000 break-ups (heās got the tweets to back up those numbers). His HBO special, Daniel Sloss Live: X, is a miraculous 85 minutes on the topic of male toxicity.
Now, in his first book, he picks up where Jigsaw and his other specials left off, and goes after every conceivable kind of relationshipāwith oneās country (Danielās is Scotland), with America, with lovers, ex-lovers, ex-lovers who you hate, ex-lovers who hate you, with parents, with best friends (male and female), not-best friends, with children, and with siblings. In Everyone You Hate Is Going to Die, every relationship gets the hilarious, brutal (but always incisive) Sloss treatment as he explains why all of our relationships are fragile and ridiculous and awfulābut, just maybe, also valuable and meaningful.
My Thoughts
Although itās safe to say Iām a lover of fiction, lately Iāve gravitated towards non-fiction and – because of this – Iāve stumbled across some of the best books Iāve read in ages, this being one of them.
My sister picked this book up as weāre both fans of Sloss and his straight to the point comedic style and ā despite the initial apprehension the title caused for me (mainly because I wasnāt feeling a depressing book!) ā I actually throughly enjoyed reading this one, as strange as it feels to say that.
It feels strange to say that because this book is blunt. Incredibly so. So blunt it takes you off guard a bit and has you reading and re-reading sentences to make sure you read them correctly (you did). I thought Iād be offended by the sharp, sarcastic tone of this one and the fact that all bases are not just covered but picked and pull apart but I think this actually made the reading experience for me – though there were obvious edited parts, you didnāt lose the sense that these are Slossās thoughts and feelings.
Sloss covers a lot of bases in this book, from life, death, sex, relationships to things like politics and that pandemic weāre all sick of hearing about (and even more sick of living in!) in a book which is deeply personal, informative and funny.
Everyone You Hate Is Going to Die is not the most ground breaking non-fiction youāll ever read (I have no idea what the āmost ground breaking non-fictionā youāll read is because Iām pretty sure that translates as dull and boring, but each to their own!) but it does make you realise there is so much to value.

I’m not a big reader of non-fiction books but this one sounds funny! Glad you enjoyed it x
