The Great British Bake Off, Season 10 Episode 10: My Thoughts

Last week, it was the Semi Final. Time flies, doesn’t it? The bakers took on Patisserie Week, with Alice scooping Star Baker and Rosie left the tent.

The bakers

I’ve got to say…I predicted this. Even though I had one person in mind, I had a feeling it might be time for the underdog.

Steph absolutely broke my heart this week. Partly because she reminded me of me trying (and failing) to get through History A-Level and partly because it’s horrible to see anyone get upset….especially over baking!

The challenges

The Final began with the Signature Challenge, which saw the bakers make a…..CHOCOLATE CAKE. Doesn’t really scream “final of a high pressure, very difficult baking competition”, does it? Anyway, David impressed, whilst Steph’s Star Baker effect begun to fade and Alice’s cake was ok.

Next, for the Technical Challenge, the bakers had to make twice baked Stilton soufflés. Steph’s soufflé turned into a cheesy, messy puddle, Alice’s was alright and – in the end – David won the challenge.

Ah the Showstopper. The last Showstopper of the series. The bakers had to make a trompe l’oeil picnic basket. Essentially, like most of 2019, it’s several things promising to be something then actually being something else!

Alice’s offering was exceptional, Steph’s was underwhelming and David’s looked like something that you’d get delivered as a gift.

The result

It’s insane really. For ages, I think everyone’s money was on Steph. She’d won Star Baker a crazy amount of times, always impressed the judges and seemed effortless under pressure. I think, unfortunately, the pressure got to her this week.

Even though loads of people have come out and said the winner didn’t deserve their title as they hadn’t won Star Baker, thinking about it now, it doesn’t matter. It all comes down to how they perform at the final moments and, though Alice did amazingly, I think David did just enough to scoop the prize.

Even if, as my friend pointed out, it’s literally “only a cake stand and some flowers”, David is a well deserved winner and I can’t wait to see where the win takes him.
